February 20th – 23rd, 2024

Reminders:

This week we are working on:

  •  The letter ‘Yy‘. This letter has two sounds and we know lots of words, like: yogourt, yo-yo, yoga, pyjama, crayon, cylindre, cygne, pays, nettoyer, gymnase and finally the outlier that does not say its sound les yeux! Idéllo class code: 5F5423
  • We’ll be discussing the basic needs of humans and our daily routines this week and next. We’ll talk about food and hydration, hygiene, shelter, love and belonging, hobbies and physical activities. 
  • Every day we read, write, speak and solve maths problems in French. Students are starting to speak more and more French – bravo les amis!

February 12th – 16th, 2024

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Qq‘. We know lots of words like: question, qui, quand, quatre, quoi, quel, qu’est-ce que, quille. Idéllo class code: 5F5423
  • This month we are having lots of conversations about families, love and caring behaviours, friendship, positive affirmations, and what makes us unique. 
  • Wednesday is Valentine’s Day. We will be exchanging cards and enjoying some themed activities.  
  • Thursday we will be recognizing 100 days of school. We’ll spend the whole day working with this number. No need to send anything to school. 
  • Friday we take the bus to South Sahali to enjoy some Carnaval activities. We will return by lunchtime. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather, has a water bottle and a snack that could be packed in a pocket to take along with us.

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Pp‘. We know lots of words with this sound:, patine, petit, petite, plein, pizza, patate, papa, plumes, peur, printemps, peinture, perdu, poisson et pieuvre, poilu. Idéllo class code: 5F5423
  • In reading we are working on composed sounds, like: ch‘, ‘ou‘, ‘eau‘, ‘oi‘.
  • We are wrapping up our wild Canadian animal unit this week. Students have loved sharing their knowledge of local animals and writing les devinettes. 
  • In maths, we continue to work on solving addition and subtraction facts under 20. Right now we are using physical counters like tokens, cubes or rocks to help us add and subtract.

This week we are working on:

  • The letter ‘Gg‘. This letter has two sounds and it is a challenge for many students to print. We know the words: gants, glace, gauche, gris, grizzly, genou, girafe. Idéllo class code: 5F5423
  • In science, we’ll be learning all about hibernation this week. Check out this video from our very own BC Wildlife Park.
  • This week is Unplug and Play! A log sheet was sent home Friday the 19th. Help your child complete it and return it to school at the end of the week. Mme Bossio, our school librarian, will be drawing for prizes next week. 
    • Tuesday – carry a poem in your pocket

    • Thursday – dress as your favourite book character (no masks)

  • Thursday continues to be our homework check-in and library day. Help your child remember their home reading duotang, journal and classroom books. Keep these materials dry by packing them in the library bag along with library books for Mme Bossio.

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Ss‘. We know the words: sur, sous, soulier, soleil, sandwich, sauter, ski, serpent à sonnette. Click the links to explore this sound and work on oral comprehension.  Class code: 5F5423
  • We are doing lots of non-fiction writing about wild Canadian animals. We are listing physical characteristics, habitats, food source, actions and how our local animals make it through winter (adapt, migrate, hibernate). 
  • We are working our way through different strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems under 20. First, we are using our fingers.

January 8th – 12th, 2024

Reminders:

  • Send a pair of shoes back to school to stay in your child’s locker until Spring Break. These shoes will only be worn indoors. 
  • Please also send a small bag of emergency clothing to keep in your child’s locker in case they need to change. A pair of underwear, socks, pants and a shirt – write your child’s name on the bag.

This week we are working on:

  • Getting back into school routines, expectations, and speaking and listening in French. 
    • Set your child up for the school day: dress for the weather (ensure they can manage on their own), pack healthy foods they enjoy and can open themselves, pack a clean full water bottle, get a good nights sleep. 
  • We will discuss what we did over the two week break. This will give us the chance to practise speaking in the past tense. For example: je suis allé, j’ai joué, j’ai vu, j’ai visité, j’ai mangé, j’ai fait, j’ai donné, j’ai reçu. 
  • We continue to learn with the letter sound ‘Cc‘. We know: cougar, coyote, cygne, canard colvert, caribou, castor, cerf, chouette, chèvres.
  • In maths, we are starting our first addition and subtraction strategy – our fingers! We will be using our fingers to count and solve addition and subtraction problems under 10.

This week we are working on:

  • The letter ‘Cc‘. We will spend two weeks learning with this letter. We know lots of words with this sound: cadeau, couronne, cinq, cochon, coqcitrouille, cabane, compter.  There are also many common sight words with this letter such as: ce, ici, ça, cet, cette, comme, comment, chaque, combien.
  • Tuesday is the big day – our winter concert! We are very busy on Tuesday, basically singing all day…. into the night. Check your emails from the office for details and don’t lose your tickets! Doors open at 6:10pm for the evening performance. Students who are being dropped off can head down to their classroom to join their class. 
  • Wednesday is Winter Fun Day – thank you to the grade 6s who planned and will be leading this fun day for our students.
  • On Friday, we will empty our lockers and send everything home (inside shoes, back up clothing, everything!). Over the two week break, check that your child’s shoes still fit and refresh their bag of emergency clothing that will stay in their locker until Spring Break.

  • The letter sound ‘Kk‘. We know the words: Kamloops, koala, kangourou. We know very few words with this letter sound in French – it is not our first choice when spelling a word. 
  • Mme Jules will be leading a festive craft with us this week – we can’t wait! 
  • We get to watch the grade 6/7 band concert this Thursday! Our classrooms are across the hall from the music room so we have heard all their hard work leading up to the concert. It really is quite impressive. 
  • We continue to discuss the various ways our families celebrate this time of year. 
  • Students have been working hard with M Hogeveen in preparation for the concert next week. Students are encouraged to dress up on the 19th – please no hats or big headbands that could block the student behind them. Thank you!

  • We continue to practice our songs for the Winter Concert. Students are sounding good! Sing our French song at home.
