This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Kk‘. We know the words: Kamloops, koala, kangourou. We know very few words with this letter sound in French – it is not our first choice when spelling a word. 
  • Mme Jules will be leading a festive craft with us this week – we can’t wait! 
  • We get to watch the grade 6/7 band concert this Thursday! Our classrooms are across the hall from the music room so we have heard all their hard work leading up to the concert. It really is quite impressive. 
  • We continue to discuss the various ways our families celebrate this time of year. 
  • Students have been working hard with M Hogeveen in preparation for the concert next week. Students are encouraged to dress up on the 19th – please no hats or big headbands that could block the student behind them. Thank you!

December 5th – 8th, 2023

  • We are diving straight into NOËL! Lots of Christmas vocabulary to learn with this month. We sing, read, write and play games that help us build up our French vocabulary.
  • We will be discussing how our families celebrate this time of year over the next few weeks. 
  • We continue to practice our songs for the Winter Concert. Students are sounding good! Sing our French song at home.

November 27th – December 1st, 2023

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Dd‘. We know the words: dans, danser, dodo, dragon, dinosaure, dentiste, dent, décembre. To open videos, use class code: 5f5423
  • In maths, we are working on creating and extending patterns.
    • We continue to work on naming and representing numbers between 11 and 20. Many students struggle to remember the names of these numbers in French. Another challenging concept in grade 1 is understanding place value (16 vs 61 for example).
  • Mme Sarah continues to teach the Superflex program. It is a Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum that teaches social thinking skills. She will be teaching these skills all year as part of the health curriculum.

  • Library and homework day continues to be Thursday! We will be adding December’s bundle into the duotang this week.
    • You’ll find new reading games to play at home, song lyrics, and lots of vocabulary that will help your child write at home. Students will also receive a new journal to take home. Students will have the opportunity to share their home writing every Thursday when we exchange our books.

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Bb‘. We know the words: bon/bonne, beau/belle, bonbon, bobo, bonjour, bonhomme de neige, bleuet, brosse, bouton, bleu, beige, blanc, brun, bâton. To open videos, use class code: 5f5423
  • In both reading and writing, we are working on pulling words apart slowly. Saying the word slowly allows us to hear all the sounds. We are working on identifying the first, middle and last sounds in words. In reading, we use our finger to help us read all the sounds from left to right.
  • We continue to practice our songs for the Winter Concert on Dec 19th.

  • Mme Bossio reads us a story before we exchange library books every Thursday afternoon. Students love browsing the shelves and choosing their own books. Thank you for ensuring your child’s books are packed.

This week we are working on:

  • Verbs! We have been making up fun sentences with all kinds of action words, for example: Voici un lion qui danse avec un tigre. 
  • Remembrance Day – Le Jour du Souvenir. We focus our learning on a few key terms (veteran, Canada, peace, poppy).  Listen to the song we sing by Charlotte Diamond. We attend the school-wide assembly on Friday the 10th. All students will be given a poppy. 
  • In maths we are making patterns with colours, size, shapes. We continue to review printing digits and counting objects to 20 in French.

October 30th – November 3rd, 2023

This week we are working on:

  • We are all done reviewing our vowel sounds! This week we are working on the letter ‘Ll‘ We know the words: un lion, lave, lundi, lire, luge
    • We are working on breaking words apart into single sounds. We repeat words, say them slowly and break them apart. We then try to write words down in the order we hear the sounds.
  • Celebrating Halloween! Our grade 7 leaders have a dance planned for primary students. Students may come in regular clothes, pyjamas or a costume. No masks, weapons or anything too scary. Please ensure your child can use to the washroom unassisted with their costume. Please do not send treats to school for other students.
  • In science, we have been discussing the difference between natural items and artificial ones. Is it made by nature or made by a human?

  • Remember to pack library books, classroom books and the homework duotang with your child every Thursday. Students who do not have their materials often feel left out and are bored waiting for the rest of the class to complete the book exchange process.

October 23rd – 27th

This week we are working on:

  • The sound ‘ÈÊË’.  We know the words: frère, mère, père, être, tête, noël, zèbre.
  • In writing we’re adding word bubbles! For example: Voici un chien qui dit «bonjour.»  Je vois une sorcière qui dit «hi hi hi!»
  • We continue to learn with Halloween vocabulary.
  • We continue to work on naming and printing numbers up to 20. We play games. We count different objects. We use ten frames. We use whiteboards and number lines to play ‘guess my number’.   
  • No library exchange this week.  Our library is hosting a book fair.

This week we are working on:

  • The sound ‘Uu’. We know the words: surluge, nuage, lune.
  • First thing every morning we sing songs and work on oral language outside. This week we will be working with verbs! For example: Je vois un chat qui dort. Je vois un chien qui mange. Je vois un poisson qui nage. Je vois un oiseau qui vole dans le ciel. We write our ideas down on whiteboards or in our journals. 
  • We are very excited to welcome Will Stroet to ÉLG this Tuesday. We sing many of his songs regularly. Check out  la récréation and à la biblio.
  • October 12th is Picture Day

Homework – les devoirs: Thursdays

  • Please help your child pack their homework duotang and their classroom books in the Ziploc bag. Photocopied books are yours to keep – start building a small library at home! The homework bag can go inside the library bag along with library books. 
  • Remember to initial a pumpkin each day you work on French literacy with your child. Students who fill in all their pumpkins will get a small prize to take home.
