This week we are working on:

  • We continue to learn with the letter ‘Cc‘. This letter has a lot of phonics instruction. We are blending letters “cr” “cl” and we are reading more composed sounds such as: ou, on, oi, ch, au.
  • In maths, we are working on counting back from 20 to 0. We have also been using a number line and a hundred chart to explore the concept of +1, -1, +10 and -10 from any given number.
  • In science, we have begun a unit on animals. We are discussing the animals we know and whether they are wild or domesticated. We are talking about physical features such as fur, feathers, scales, fins, claws, tails, stripes etc. 

Homework: 5- 10 minutes of daily French practise with an adult.

  • Tuesday we visit the library and have a homework check-in. Students will exchange classroom reading books and library books. Thank you for packing your child’s materials. 

January 5th – 9th, 2026

Reminders:

  • Dress your child for the weather and label all clothing items.

This week we are working on:

  • Getting back into school routines, expectations, and speaking and listening in French. 
    • Set your child up for the school day: dress for the weather (ensure they can manage clothing on their own), pack healthy foods they enjoy and can open themselves, pack a clean full water bottle, get a good night’s sleep. 
  • We will discuss what we did over the two week break. This will give us the chance to practise speaking in the past tense. For example: je suis allé, j’ai joué, j’ai vu, j’ai visité, j’ai mangé, j’ai fait, j’ai donné, j’ai reçu… 
  • This week and next, we will focus on the letter sounds for ‘Cc‘. We know: cougar, coyote, cygne, canard colvert, caribou, castor, cerf, chouette, chèvres.
  • This month, we will be learning and sharing our knowledge about animals. We’ll discuss pets, domestic animals and wild animals. Much of our learning will focus on physical characteristics (fur, feathers, scales) and how our local animals survive winter (hibernate, adapt, migrate).

This week we are working on:

  • We are busy practicing for the concert with M. Hogeveen and the Gr 2s on Monday. We perform our songs three times on Tuesday – once for the student body at 10:30am, the 1:30pm performance for parents, and the 6:00pm performance for parents.
  • Wednesday the grade 6 classes have prepared a fun day! Students will be in multi-grade groups and will rotate through a variety of activities. 
  • We continue to discuss the various ways our families celebrate this time of year. 
  • We will check the lost and found and do an extra tidy of the classroom and our lockers Friday afternoon.

  • We continue to have extra practices with M. Hogeveen and the grade 2s in preparation for our songs for the Winter Concert next week. 
  • Wednesday, we get to enjoy the grade 6/7 band concert!

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Dd‘. We know the words: dans, danser, dodo, dentiste, dent, décembre. To open videos, use class code: 5f5423
  • In maths, we are identifying and comparing solids (3d shapes). 
    • We continue to work on naming and representing numbers between 11 and 20. Many students struggle to remember the names of these numbers in French. Another challenging concept in grade 1 is understanding place value (16 vs 61 for example).
  • We have extra music practice this week and next with the grade 2s. Students are eager to sing for you all on at the concert .

  • The letter sound ‘Bb‘. We know the words: bon/bonne, beau/belle, bonbon, bobo, bonjour, bonhomme de neige, bleuet, brosse, bouton, bleu, beige, blanc, brun, bâton. To open videos, use class code: 5f5423
  • In both reading and writing, we are working on pulling words apart slowly. Saying the word slowly allows us to hear all the sounds. We are working on identifying the first, middle and last sounds in words. In reading, we use our finger to help us read all the sounds from left to right.

  • Mme Bossio reads us a story before we exchange library books every Tuesday. Students love browsing the shelves and choosing their own books. Thank you for ensuring your child’s books are packed.

  • The letter ‘Hh‘, called “ash“. This letter is silent in French. We know the words: huit, hibou, hippopotame, hippocampe, hérisson, hélicoptère, hiver, honnête, hockey, heureux, horloge.

  • Teachers are busy reading one-on-one with students this week as we gather data to write report cards. The first learning update (report card) will be published on Dec 12th. This week we are working on:

  • This week we are working on the letter ‘Ll’ We know the words: lion, lave, lundi, lire, luge
    • We are working on breaking words apart into chunks (ba+na+ne). We repeat words, say them slowly and break them apart. We then try to write words down in the order we hear the sounds.
  • In maths, we are working on patterns
  • RoboThink Worshop – we all have a 45 minute session this week in our library.

October 27th – 31st, 2025

This week we are working on:

  • Monday we take our first bus ride at 10:30am. We should arrive at Pete Murray’s Corn Farm by 11:15 am. We’ll be outside until we leave at 1:30 so please dress your child for the weather. Please pack a water bottle, a packed lunch, a snack in a backpack. Please send a cloth bag to hold the pumpkin (labelled please). 
  • Tuesday is finally Come Read With Me! Parents please head straight to the library for 8:30am. Grade 1 students should stay outside with their class. We’ll see parents in the classrooms to play word games after the session concludes in the library. At 10:00 am it will be time to say goodbye and head out for recess. 
  • We are reviewing all our vowel sounds this week – a, e, i, o, u, y, é, è, ê, ë. We continue working on reading 2, 3 and 4 letter sound words with simple sounds, such as: le, ni, sa, du, lac, gru, ami, clé, têt, papa, moto, vélo, tuba.
  • We continue to work on writing complete sentences. We’ll have lots of fun with halloween words this week. 
  • Friday is Halloween! Students may come in a costume if they’d like. Please no masks or weapons. Keep in mind students will still be playing outside and will need to use the washroom. Please do not send treats to share with other students. The grade 7 students have planned a scavenger hunt for us. 

Homeworkcheck-in on Tuesdays + library visit and book exchange

  • Please help your child pack their homework duotang. Photocopied books are yours to keep – start building a small library at home! 
  • This week we will send home a classroom levelled reading book. Please send these books back each week. 
  • Remember to initial a pumpkin each day you work on French homework with your child. Students who fill in all their pumpkins will get a small prize to take home at the end of the month. The goal is 5-10 minutes every day.
