This week we are working on:

  • Monday we take our first bus ride at 10:30am. We should arrive at Pete Murray’s Corn Farm by 11:15 am. We’ll be outside until we leave at 1:30 so please dress your child for the weather. Please pack a water bottle, a packed lunch, a snack in a backpack. Please send a cloth bag to hold the pumpkin (labelled please). 
  • Tuesday is finally Come Read With Me! Parents please head straight to the library for 8:30am. Grade 1 students should stay outside with their class. We’ll see parents in the classrooms to play word games after the session concludes in the library. At 10:00 am it will be time to say goodbye and head out for recess. 
  • We are reviewing all our vowel sounds this week – a, e, i, o, u, y, é, è, ê, ë. We continue working on reading 2, 3 and 4 letter sound words with simple sounds, such as: le, ni, sa, du, lac, gru, ami, clé, têt, papa, moto, vélo, tuba.
  • We continue to work on writing complete sentences. We’ll have lots of fun with halloween words this week. 
  • Friday is Halloween! Students may come in a costume if they’d like. Please no masks or weapons. Keep in mind students will still be playing outside and will need to use the washroom. Please do not send treats to share with other students. The grade 7 students have planned a scavenger hunt for us. 

Homeworkcheck-in on Tuesdays + library visit and book exchange

  • Please help your child pack their homework duotang. Photocopied books are yours to keep – start building a small library at home! 
  • This week we will send home a classroom levelled reading book. Please send these books back each week. 
  • Remember to initial a pumpkin each day you work on French homework with your child. Students who fill in all their pumpkins will get a small prize to take home at the end of the month. The goal is 5-10 minutes every day.

This week we are working on:

  • The vowel sound ‘Uu‘. We know the words: surlugenuage, lune.
  • We are working on reading and writing complete sentences. For example: C’est une feuille jaune. Regarde le chat noir. Je vois une citrouille orange. Il y a un arbre vert.
  • In maths, we are working with patterns – les suites! We use shapes, numbers, movement and objects to make different kinds of patterns. 
  • We are finally feeling and seeing the change of seasons!

This week we are working on:

  • The letter ‘Oo‘. We know the words: robot, ovale, bobo, chocolat
  • Every day at school we work on French phonics (hearing, saying, writing, reading). We play games with peers that help us learn together and get the repetition we need. We read short decodable books that help us practice touching below the sounds and saying those sounds out loud. 
  • In maths, we continue to review counting numbers, naming numbers, comparing numbers below 20. Practice in English with Jack Hartmann and in French with ten frames here. 
    • We are also starting to review what we know about patterns. We are using 2D shapes and colours

Homework: 5 minutes every day of French literacy with an adult

  • Please send the duotang to school on Tuesday. We will have a homework check-in and add items to take home.
    • Hold on to all the photocopied books that are sent home. They can be re-read and used for writing activities.

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Ii‘. It is called and makes the sound “eee”. We know the words: merci, hibou, pic, pie, sourisbibliothèque. Click on the poster for ‘Ii’ below to hear the story that helps us remember its sound.
  • Learning new word games and maths games. Our goal is to learn to play all the word games parents will be receiving on Oct 28th for the Come Read With Me event. 
  • Observing and discussing the seasonal changes in the school yard, the city and our yards at home.
  • We begin every morning outside no matter the weather. We work on oral language, we read stories, sing songs, and then play all together as a grade 1 cohort. Help your child be ready to learn by dressing them for the weather.
  • We’ll be discussing the things we do with our families in autumn.

September 29th – October 3rd, 2025

What we are working on this week:

  • Monday is Orange Shirt Day at school. Students are encouraged to wear orange. We will be gathering as a grade 1 cohort to learn about the day.   • Wednesday we are launching our grade 1 homework routine.  
    • Students will be sent home with a duotang full of resources to support French learning at home. The goal is to start small (5 minutes), to keep it fun and consistent. Grade 1 homework means working on French one on one with an adult. You can sing songs, play word games, write letters/sounds/words, even listen to French books on the computer. There is a prize at the end of the month for students who complete 12 days of homework in October. Only send homework duotang to school on library exchange day (Tuesdays). 
  • Thursday we will visit the library to exchange books. 

September 23rd – 26th, 2025

This week we are working on:

  • We have been saying, writing and reading short sounds (a consonant plus a vowel) like: le, ne, ma, si, du etc…. This week we are adding in all the accents on the letter Ee. 
  • We’ve had a change of seasons! We will be discussing all the changes we see in our yards and at school as the weather shifts into fall. We have lots of songs that help us build our vocabulary – click the links below and use the Idéllo class code: 5f5423
  • In maths we continue to count objects and match the numbers. Grade 1s struggle to remember what the numbers between 11 and 20 are in French. To help us remember the names of the numbers and what symbols represent them we play games, sing songs, and repeat routines representing numbers in different ways during calendar. 

 

September 15th – 19th, 2025

This week we are working on:

  • The letter sound ‘Ee‘. We know the words: tigresable, renard, chiffre.
    • Click on the links below to keep learning with the letter Ee. Try reading this week’s Lecture Enfant books with your child. Practice hearing the sound “euh” in the words you hear, seeing the letter Ee in the print and repeating the sentences back or reading along.
  • In Maths, we are working on printing digits 2 and 3. We are also working on naming numbers 0-20. Printing numbers backwards is a common challenge for grade 1s as is naming the numbers 11 through 19. We also continue reviewing our 2D shapes and making patterns.
  • Tuesday we visit the library to exchange books. The grade 1 reading program (homework) will begin after Come Read With Me on October 28th. 
  • We have a fire drill and a lockdown drill this week.
  • The whole school is running a Terry Fox Run this Friday afternoon. We grade 1s run on the field.

This week we are working on…

  • Getting to know les amis!  
    • Our learning begins outside each morning. We practice our conversation skills, sing songs and play games together. It is very important to be dressed for the weather!
  • Our first trip to the library is on Tuesday. Please send a cloth bag for books.
  • We are starting with the vowel sound Aa. We will work on this vowel sound all week. What the letter is called, what sound it makes, hearing and seeing the sound in words we know like: ananaspapamaman, arbreami. We’ll practice printing in our workbooks, writing in our journals and reading sound blends like: la, ta, sa, ma, na, va, ça.
    • We use a reading program called Au village des sons to help us remember the shapes of the letters and the sounds they make. There is a short story for each sound, a character poster and an action to help us remember – this is the story of petit a
